Balanced Poultry-Litter Feeding for the Backbone of the Garden
Old Cobblers Farm Wicked Organics 4-3-3 is a single-ingredient organic fertilizer made from dehydrated, pasteurized poultry litter, formulated for the woody and perennial backbone of a garden — trees, shrubs, and the perennials that come back each year. Its balanced 4-3-3 analysis is the point: enough nitrogen for green, healthy foliage, with phosphorus for roots and flower set and potassium for strength and resilience — but not so much nitrogen that it pushes the soft, weak, overly lush growth that leaves shrubs and perennials vulnerable to pests, weather, and winter damage. Because it's poultry litter, it also supplies the calcium, trace minerals, and organic matter naturally present in that material, and it releases slowly as soil microbes break it down.
It suits flowering shrubs, ornamental perennials, and shade and specimen trees, young or established, and it's gentle enough for new plantings and transplanting. Feed in early spring as plants come out of dormancy, again in early summer to support flowering and foliage, and optionally a light feeding in late summer for long-blooming perennials.
Two things to know. First, the application rate: because poultry litter is naturally lower in concentration than blended mineral fertilizers, you use more of it — 25 lbs per 1,000 sq ft (about 2.5 lbs per 100 sq ft), so a 5 lb bag covers roughly 200 sq ft. That's normal for this kind of product; just don't under-apply at the rates you'd use for a stronger blend. Second, it's an animal/manure-based product: it is not vegan, it can attract pets and wildlife and has a mild earthy odor, and although it's pasteurized, it's good practice to wash your hands after handling and to work it into the soil.
Key Benefits
Balanced, not pushy — A 4-3-3 ratio feeds green, healthy foliage and flowering without the excess nitrogen that pushes soft, weak, pest- and winter-vulnerable growth.
Natural calcium & trace minerals — As a poultry-litter product it supplies calcium, trace minerals, and organic matter that blended NPK fertilizers often don't.
Slow-release — Releases slowly as soil microbes break it down — sustained, non-burning feeding suited to woody plants and perennials.
Roots and easier transplants — Phosphorus supports deep root development for better drought tolerance and stability; gentle enough to ease transplant transitions.
For the garden's backbone — Flowering shrubs, ornamental perennials, and shade/specimen trees — young or established — plus mixed landscape beds.
Builds soil over time — Organic matter feeds soil microbes and builds structure for long-term landscape health.
Where to use it: deciduous and evergreen trees, ornamental and flowering shrubs, perennial beds, turfgrass, and general landscape maintenance.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
-Established trees: 1 lb per inch of trunk diameter, broadcast under the drip line
-New trees: 1–2 cups mixed with the backfill soil
-Shrubs: ½–1 cup per plant, in spring and early fall
Timing:
-Early spring: as plants come out of dormancy
-Early summer: to support flowering and foliage
-Late summer (optional): a light feeding for long-blooming perennials
Steps:
1. Spread evenly under the canopy / over the root zone of trees and shrubs; side-dress perennials around the base. Avoid direct contact with stems or trunks.
2. For new trees, mix into the backfill soil; lightly incorporate into the topsoil elsewhere.
3. Water in well after applying so nutrients move into the root zone; mulching helps retain moisture and protect soil microbes.
4. Feed 2–4 times through the growing season depending on plant type and season length.
When and how often: early spring and early summer, optionally late summer; 2–4 feedings per season. Wash hands after handling.
What NOT to do: do not apply at the low rates used for concentrated blends (you'll under-feed), do not pile it against trunks or stems, and do not leave it surface-exposed where pets or wildlife can reach it.
