From Bud Break to Leaf Drop — Balanced 10-10-10 Feeding for Flowering Shrubs

Old Cobblers Farm Wicked Growth 10-10-10 is a balanced fertilizer made for deciduous shrubs — the flowering and foliage shrubs that shed their leaves each fall and power back every spring. The 10-10-10 analysis supplies equal parts of the three major nutrients: 10% nitrogen for lush green leaves and strong stems, 10% phosphorus for deep root growth and flower bud development, and 10% potassium for resilience and overall plant health.

Deciduous shrubs run on a seasonal cycle: a burst of growth at spring bud break, flowering through summer, then energy storage before dormancy. Balanced, even feeding every 6–8 weeks supports each stage in turn — and because this is a fast-acting granular formula, nutrients reach the roots quickly after watering in. Simple per-shrub rates make it easy to feed a single specimen lilac or a whole mixed border.

Key Benefits

Balanced for the full cycle — Equal 10-10-10 nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium support leaves, roots, and flower buds together through the whole season.

Matched to the seasonal rhythm — Feeding every 6–8 weeks powers spring bud break, supports summer flowering, and lets the plant store energy before dormancy.

Per-shrub rates, no guesswork — ½ cup for a young spirea up to 3 cups for a mature lilac — plus a backfill rate for brand-new plantings.

The whole shrub border, one bag — One formula for lilac, hydrangea, forsythia, weigela, ninebark, viburnum, and a dozen more flowering shrubs.

Fast-acting granular formula — Fast-acting granules dissolve with deep watering and reach the roots quickly.

Winter-smart feeding — The stop-by-late-summer schedule helps shrubs harden off properly instead of carrying tender growth into frost.

Where to use it: in-ground beds, borders, hedges, mass plantings, and container shrubs — including lilac, forsythia, spirea, rose of Sharon, panicle, smooth, and oakleaf hydrangeas, beautyberry, ninebark, deutzia, mock orange, shrub dogwoods, weigela, smoke bush, winterhazel, chokeberry, and deciduous viburnums.

Application Instructions

-New plantings: mix ½–1 cup into the backfill soil when planting
-Established small shrubs: ½ cup per shrub
-Established medium shrubs: 1 cup per shrub
-Established large shrubs: 2–3 cups per shrub
Steps:
1. Measure the right amount for the shrub's size. More is not better.
2. Apply evenly around the drip line (the soil under the outer edge of the branches), avoiding contact with trunks and stems.
3. Lightly incorporate into the topsoil with a rake or trowel.
4. Water deeply to dissolve the granules and carry nutrients to the roots.
When and how often:
-Apply every 6–8 weeks from early spring through mid-summer
-Discontinue feeding in late summer so plants harden off before winter — late feeding pushes tender growth that frost can damage
What NOT to do: do not exceed the per-shrub rates, do not let granules rest against trunks or stems, do not skip the deep watering, and do not feed after mid-summer.

Ingredients

-Urea (10–20%) — Provides fast-acting nitrogen that fuels leaf and stem growth.
-Diammonium Phosphate / DAP (10–20%) — Supplies phosphorus for root growth and flower bud development, plus a secondary nitrogen contribution.
-Potassium Chloride (40–50%) — Also called muriate of potash; the potassium source that builds resilience and overall plant health.
