More Than Half Organic Matter. A Saponin-Rich Conditioner That Opens Up Tight Soil
Old Cobblers Farm Wicked Organics Tea Seed Meal is a single-ingredient soil conditioner made from the seed meal left after pressing oil from Camellia (tea) seeds. It's more than 50% organic matter, with a modest 4-1-1 nutrient analysis — so its job isn't to feed heavily but to improve the soil itself. Its signature is saponins, natural surfactant compounds in the seed that break water's surface tension. In practice that means better water infiltration into tight or crusted ground, more even moisture, and a more workable root zone.
It comes as a granulated crumb that dissolves slowly with rainfall or irrigation, releasing its organic matter and saponins over time rather than all at once — and feeding the beneficial soil microbes that turn organic matter into lasting structure. Turf managers on athletic fields and golf courses have long used tea seed meal as part of a soil-health program, and the same benefits apply to home lawns, vegetable beds, and ornamental plantings.
One firm safety rule comes with it: the saponins that condition your soil are toxic to fish and aquatic organisms. Never apply tea seed meal near ponds, streams, ditches, or any water body, and keep it out of storm drains.
Key Benefits
Surfactant action on water — Natural saponins break water's surface tension, improving infiltration into tight, crusted, or hydrophobic soil and spreading moisture more evenly.
50%+ organic matter — More than half its weight is organic matter — feeding beneficial microbes and building the structure that holds water and roots.
Slow-dissolving crumb — The granulated crumb dissolves gradually with rain and irrigation, releasing organic matter and active compounds over time.
Better soil structure — Looser, better-draining soil with improved root penetration and less surface crusting.
Turf-program proven — A soil-health input long used on golf courses and athletic fields, now for home lawns, beds, and ornamentals.
One natural ingredient — A single natural ingredient — Camellia seed meal — with no synthetic additives.
Where to use it: lawns and turfgrass, vegetable gardens and raised beds, ornamental beds and shrubs, and managed turf — well away from water.
Application Instructions
Application Instructions
-Lawns (general): 6–12 lbs per 1,000 sq ft; water in 0.25–0.5 inch immediately after application
-Trees & shrubs: 1–2 lbs per inch of trunk diameter
-Containers: 1–2 tablespoons per gallon of soil
Steps:
1. Confirm you're well away from any pond, stream, ditch, or storm drain before applying — this is the non-negotiable first step.
2. Spread evenly: work into the top 2–3 inches in beds, or broadcast over turf.
3. Water in immediately (0.25–0.5 inch on lawns) to begin dissolving the granulated crumb and carry the organic matter and saponins into the soil.
4. A follow-up irrigation 2–3 days later continues dissolving the granules and moves the active compounds deeper into the root zone.
When and how often: for soil conditioning, at bed prep or as a turf program input; for the best surfactant effect, time applications to early spring and late summer as the source recommends.
What NOT to do: NEVER apply near water bodies or storm drains (aquatic toxicity); do not over-apply expecting a fertilizer-level feed (this is a low-analysis conditioner); and do not skip watering-in, which is what activates it.
